Forester / Aborists – 6 posts – B3

You will be required to have working experience in a practical arboricultural / forestry environment, together with NPTC Certificates CS30 through to CS48. Applicants for these 6 posts must be over the age of 18 years to comply with legislation relating to the use of chainsaws.

Work for both posts will be outside in all weathers and will include all aspects of arboricultural and foretry maintenance. All postholders must be prepared to take part in the Forerstry section’s 24/7 365 days per year Tree Emergency On-Call Rota system. This is to repond to and undertake emergency tree works across Leeds City boundaries, for which an on-call payment plus overtime will be paid in addition to the stated salary.

Ford and Etal Estates is situated in North Northumberland. The Forestry Departent comprises of 750ha of managed forestry, an estate sawmill, fencing and general estate maintenance.

We are looking to fill a position within our Forestry Deptartment. Main tasks to include

  • Operating our small thinning’s harvester (8-ton Neuson tracked machine with Keto 51 harvesting head),
  • Chainsaw work and general estate tasks.

Experience in these tasks along with FMOC and chainsaw certificates would be an advantage.

Remuneration package offered will depend on experience.

A Forestry Worker is required to support the Head Woodman in carrying out all forestry tasks including thinning, firewood, planting and spraying. In addition, having a flexible approach carrying out other work on the Estate including fencing, clearing wind blow and other general duties.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Our Forestry Supervisor is responsible to supervise and maintain the day to day running of the practical element of the Forestry Team and Forestry Contractors reporting to the Head Forester. This role will involve developing efficiencies where possible and to be responsible for the operation, maintenance and records of Forestry machinery. This will also involve carrying out all elements of practical silviculture from young seedlings, planting, weeding both mechanical and chemical, crop thinning, high pruning, large tree felling and ground preparation works.

ABOUT YOU

The ideal candidate will be an experienced practical forester, with experience of continuous cover forestry practice, consolidated knowledge, certificates and experience of all forestry tasks, forestry machinery and health and safety. You will be able to lead a small in house team of three staff in forest harvesting and the establishment of naturally regenerated trees.

HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time permanent position working 39 hours per week, predominantly Monday to Friday. However, due to the nature of the business you will be flexible and able to work weekends and bank holiday as required.

Due to continued growth, an exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint an Assistant Estate Manager to work on our 4,300 hectare estate in St Johns Town of Dalry, Castle Douglas.

Reporting to the Estate Manager and working as part of dedicated team, the successful candidate will be required to assist in the efficient day-to-day running of the estate. This includes managing forest and woodland and overseeing activities such as timber production, conservation, recreation, establishment and restocking the sustainable forest resource.

As the successful candidate, you will have a proactive, hands on approach to project management, attention to detail, take pride in your work and possess the ability to motivate others to do the same. As a natural leader, you will have previous experience in a similar role however, you could also be an experienced estate worker looking to take the next step in your career.

Ideally, you will have a working knowledge of hydro electric engineering, but as a minimum, you will be educated to HND standard in Forestry Management and possess a full UK driving licence. Also, due to the nature of the role and the working environment, you will need to have a good level of physical fitness.

Tube/Tree Guard:

  • Each tree and stake need to have a tree guard installed

Mulch Mat:

A plastic mat needs to be placed at the base of the stake and tree, and pinned down in 5 locations with pegs.
