England is now on its highest wildfire alert of the year, with the Natural Hazards Partnership issuing red alerts for "exceptional" risk across southern England, the Midlands and parts of the north as a third heatwave grips the country. Fire crews have already been battling blazes at Devil's Dyke in the South Downs and Dovestone Reservoir near Saddleworth, and between 1 January and 6 July, 342 wildfires were recorded across the UK. Wildfires in the Cairngorms are also raging as I write this.
A Familiar Risk, Turned Up
For forestry businesses, this matters because dry ground and gusting winds turn routine site work into a genuine hazard with machinery sparks, dry brash, and public access all raise the stakes for anyone working in or near woodland right now. The Forestry Commission has stepped up its own response, alerting its National Duty Officer whenever wildfire risk becomes significant and pushing safety messaging through its #BeWildfireAware campaign on social media.
Wildfire risk isn't new to UK forestry, but three record breaking heatwaves in a single summer is a reminder that the margins are getting tighter. Simple precautions (fully extinguishing cigarettes, keeping vehicles off dry vegetation, avoiding fires and barbeques in rural areas, and reporting smoke early) still make the biggest difference.
Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine (but maybe give the disposable BBQ a miss).

Forestry Fact Corner…
🌲 Fun fact: a single mature oak can lose over 100 litres of water a day through transpiration in hot weather, partly why parched woodland gets so much more flammable during a heatwave like this one.
