The UK Forestry Jobs Newsletter shares the best curated forestry jobs in the UK, from tree planting to director level.
England's largest new commercial forest in decades looks set to go ahead, after the High Court ruled in favour of Greencroft Forest near Lanchester in County Durham. Investment firm True North plans to plant 290 hectares of farmland (roughly 430 football pitches) with 600,000 trees, running from Lanchester to Annfield Plain. The scheme had been on hold since January, when a judicial review brought by nearby landowner Lanchester Properties argued the Forestry Commission should have required a full Environmental Impact Assessment before approving it.
For us in the industry, this matters because a project of this scale doesn't just plant trees it creates work. Nurseries supplying stock, contractors doing the ground prep and planting, and the agents and managers overseeing delivery all stand to benefit once planting gets under way. With Scotland's woodland numbers still down for a second year running (see last weeks post) this is a rare bit of scale moving in the other direction.
Not the Final Word Yet
Lanchester Properties has lodged papers seeking permission to appeal, so this isn't necessarily settled. Big schemes like Greencroft tend to move in fits and starts and legal challenges and funding reviews are part and parcel of delivering forestry at this kind of scale nowadays. But the appetite for large-scale new woodland is clearly still there, and the businesses and people that can deliver it reliably stand to benefit most.
