Natural Resources Wales has thrown some welcome certainty at the Welsh timber trade, unveiling a new Timber Sales and Marketing Plan that commits to bringing 835,000–875,000 cubic metres of timber to market every year through to 2031. It's part of a wider Sustainable Growth and Value Strategy launched at the Royal Welsh Show, and it's the kind of long-term supply visibility that sawmills and hauliers have been asking for.
For forestry businesses, this matters because certainty is currency. Premier Forest Products is already restarting operations at its Croespenmaen site in South Wales, bringing former SDL Sawmills staff back to work — the sort of investment that only stacks up when you can trust the supply pipeline behind it.
Confidence is Like a House, You Need to Build it
One strategy document won't fix every squeeze in the timber supply chain, but a five-year commitment from Wales’ biggest single forest owner is a meaningful anchor. If Wales can hold to those numbers, expect more of this kind of reinvestment to follow.
Our hope is that other home nations will follow suit, nailing their colours firmly to the mast of productive forestry. The sector urgently needs more of these good news stories to build confidence and demand in home-grown timber.
