Machine Operators

General wood operatives/Labourers required for long term duration – sawmill near Selby, North Yorkshire.

Emphasis will be placed on candidates showing a good attitude towards work as well as past experience and location.

This is a 3-month contract with the strong possibility of a permanent offer after 12 weeks for the right candidate.

There are also opportunities to progress to more skilled work at a higher rate after a 6-month period for candidates showing aptitude.

Rate £8.40 per hour

Hours of work: Mon/Fri 7am or 8am – 4:30pm
40-45 hours per week
Possible Sunday work may also be available.

A general labourer/wood yard worker is required.

Work is often in the yard but will also be out on site. Duties to include:

  • loading and unloading timber supplies by hand or using a forklift truck
  • moving and stacking timber
  • sorting and labelling wood into sizes and types
  • transferring timber to the sawmill or workshop
  • trimming the timber to size using basic cutting and sawing tools
  • updating paper and computer records
  • making deliveries
  • advising customers and processing orders

You will need full UK driving licence. A chainsaw certification is ideal but not necessarily needed as training can be given.

Ford and Etal Estates is situated in North Northumberland. The Forestry Departent comprises of 750ha of managed forestry, an estate sawmill, fencing and general estate maintenance.

We are looking to fill a position within our Forestry Deptartment. Main tasks to include

  • Operating our small thinning’s harvester (8-ton Neuson tracked machine with Keto 51 harvesting head),
  • Chainsaw work and general estate tasks.

Experience in these tasks along with FMOC and chainsaw certificates would be an advantage.

Remuneration package offered will depend on experience.

A&J Scott Ltd are looking to recruit a self motivated computer literate weighbridge operator at its highly mechanised sawmill situated between Alnwick and Wooler. Experience is preferred but not essential as training will be available to the right candidate. You will be responsible for weighing vehicles and recording information through the company software package.

A tractor/timber crane operator is required to operate a New Holland T8 and timber crane.

You will be working in Argyll for summer 2018 but based in Ayr. You must be willing to travel and stay on site if far from home. An HGV licence and lorry driving experience is also preferable.

Cowal & Trossachs Forest District (CTFD) is headed by the Forest District Manager and the Area Operations Manager. The total harvesting programme is approx. 250,000m3 of timber of which 60,000m3 is carried out direct production and 190,000m3 standing sales.

We have 5 open market timber sales per year and manage a range of long term contracts on both standing and roadside sales.

CTFD is approximately 65,000 hectares in size of which 40,000ha are forested. The district employees undertake a wide range of duties in managing the forested area, its associated habitats, recreation and communities.

The post forms part of the harvesting team which harvests approx. 14,000m3 of timber per year. The successful applicant will receive training and consolidation where required.

Purpose of the Job

Work closely with the harvesting team to plan the site, meet District targets for outputs and specifications and ensure all health and safety issues are addressed.

Key Work Areas

Contribute to the delivery of the direct production programme, assisting with the ongoing sustainable thinning’s programme across central Scotland;

Complete all forest operations in line with health & safety and work with the Forester and Work Site Supervisor to manage the safety signage on site;

Complete all forest operations in line with environmental standards;

Complete site risk assessments and plans as and when required;

Responsible for ensuring machines are maintained and liaising with the workshop as and when required for assistance;

Work with the Forester to ensure stock control is maintained.

Person Specification

Experience and Professional/Technical Expertise

Essential:

  • Forest Machine Operator Certificate (FMOC) for both harvester and forwarder, although consideration may be given if a candidate holds only one;
  • Previous experience of forest or land management based operations involving heavy plant machinery;
  • Full UK driving license.

Desirable

• National Proficiency Tests Council (NPTC) Forest Machine Operators Certificate 14.5, 1.5, 2.1, 2.2, 3.2;

• Experience of working in thinnings;

• Experience of working in a small team.
