Moray & Aberdeenshire Forest District covers the National Forest Estate in north east
Scotland, comprising approximately 58,000 hectares of woodlands. The District is
silviculturally diverse with a high proportion of continuous cover forestry and large
thinning’s programme.

The unit welcomes approximately 1.8M day visits annually with key recreational centres at Bennachie, Countesswells, Huntly Peregrine Centre and Culbin.

There are 44 Forest Plans covering approximately 150 woodland blocks ranging from less than 50 hectares to Fetteresso and Clashindarroch each of which are over 6,000 hectares.

Management prescriptions for Capercaillie, Salmon rich riparian corridors, Black grouse,Wildcat and Raptors feature prominently.

Purpose of the Job
As a forest planner you will be responsible for programme planning, taking felled areas through until implementation by the relevant specialist operational team. You will coordinate various. District survey programmes including stocking density assessment, Low Impact Silviculture Systems, and open space. An element of the job will also be to facilitate a ‘whole team’ approach to the review and preparation of land management plans (LMP), setting out clear objectives and programmes of work to secure multiple benefits onScotland’s National Forest Estate.

These plans will address issues such as woodland, open land and habitat conservation management, ecosystem services, timber production, access and landscape. This is an exciting and forward thinking role that combines leadership with facilitation and problem solving skills.

Our plans have to be efficient and practical, but also responsive to the opportunities that the land offers and to the context of FES Corporate Plan objectives. Preparing a plan requires the planner to get out and about to gain first-hand knowledge of the land and develop a thorough understanding of the key management issues.

Co-ordinate & manage planting and natural regeneration programmes of work that
flow from land management plans to ensure the delivery team understands its work
programme.

  • Prepare LMP in line with the UK Forestry Standard and the UK Woodland Assurance Scheme (UKWAS). This includes analysis of financial, environmental and social aspects of plan proposals as well as undertaking Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) determinations when required as part of LMP revisions or amendments.
  • When preparing plans, collaborate with relevant colleagues to explore management options, creatively address key problems identified at scoping and provide efficient and practical solutions to meeting objectives over the required timeframe.
  • As part of the plan preparation process build and maintain excellent working
    relationships with stakeholders such as community groups and statutory consultees.
  • Co-ordinate & manage the planning and management of forest surveys
    programmes/ roads programmes, etc.

Person Specification

Experience and Professional/Technical Expertise

Essential:

  • Degree or HND in Forestry or equivalent Land Management specialism.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and practical experience of forest operations, forest management or land management.
  • Competent user of IT and proficient in all Microsoft Office packages including Word and Excel.
  • Competent user of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Desirable:

  • Member, or working towards membership, of the Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF) or another relevant professional body.
  • Familiar with environmental guidelines, Scottish Forestry Strategy and UKWAS.
  • Knowledge of the principles of Landscape Planning.

Surrey is the most wooded county in England and the Trust manages 1,500 hectares of woodland for conservation, biodiversity and timber production.

Educated to degree level (relevant qualification), with a passion for woodland and wildlife conservation, you will need to be enthusiastic, well organised with excellent communication skills. Extensive woodland management experience, including the management of forestry contractors, knowledge of current woodland management grants, regulatory compliance and surveying are essential.

A good working knowledge of GIS, mapping and data analysis will be helpful. Regular liaison with local stakeholders, neighbours and interested parties will be involved so the ability to explain and enthuse others about our plans will be a vital skill.

This role involves travel across Surrey, with an office base in either SWT HQ in Pirbright or with our Estate Team on Wisley Common. A full UK driving licence is necessary. .
